Zahara Moufid, Filmmaker
Filmmaker Zahara Moufid will be attending this years Waterford Film Festival. Zahara founded the Dublin Arabic Film Festival in 2014 along with Oscar nominated director Jim Sheridan. She will be discussing Arabic filmmaking and culture as well as presenting two short films, 'Salam' a short documentary that gives an insight into the Syrian refugee crisis and her latest short film Pappy.

Synopsis: This is a film about the Tuam babies in Ireland. 796 babies were thrown in a septic tank, no proper burials, no prayers, no respect. The nuns have not yet apologised for their actions. This film is a testimony told by the survivors of Tuam mother and baby home, their experience and stories. I am publishing this with great respect for the victims, the survivors and Catherine Corless for the amount of time and work she has put into her cause trying to help the victims and having the voices of these babies heard.

10. The Vasectomy Doctor
Synopsis: Dr. Andrew Rynne was the first doctor to perform vasectomies in Ireland; he estimates that he has performed over 35,000. This is a distinction that did not come without controversy in the extremely Catholic Ireland of the nineteen seventies and eighties, but Dr. Rynne persevered in the face of opposition from the church. In 1990, Dr. Rynne was about to perform a vasectomy on a patient, when a gunman entered his surgery and shot him. After surviving the attempt on his life, he would later meet with his assailant and forgive him.

Screenplay Finalists & Awards


Every year the festival holds an annual short screenplay competition to support National and International writers including students & professionals.

For the first time since we launched this competition at the 2nd Film Festival in 2008 , this year we have awarded 40 writers as finalists.

The overall winners and runners up for the film and screenplay competition will be announced on Sun the 24th November at 5:15 pm in Central Arts.
